Description

My home is my favorite retreat. It is quiet, restorative, cheerful and calming. Portraits of the Mitchells, the freed slave couple who built this home after the Civil War, hang on the wall reminding us of its proud place in DC history. You can almost imagine going back to the late 1800's to see them rocking on the front porch. This is a farm-style house, which creates an open feel. Stairs lead from the front door upstairs to the master bedroom (queen bed, ensuite bath) with a second staircase descending into the dining room. Adjacent is a spacious, bright kitchen with wooden table where for years my friends and I have tried to solve the world's problems or at least our own. The "middle" room upstairs divides both bedrooms and can double as an office or family room with TV. The back bedroom (twin bed, ensuite bath) looks out onto our large back yard and fish pond. In the summer the fountain sounds like a mountain stream, and it's a joy to have friends over for lunch on the back patio. I love our living room with upright piano and comfy sofa. Alas, no fireplace but you may light candles in our faux fireplace. The flat screen TV hangs directly over the "fireplace", which we custom-designed to fit our floor to ceiling bookshelves. A smaller half-bath is located downstairs; very convenient for guests. Community abounds on the Hill, reachable in every direction you choose to walk. I love showing off my neighborhood to visitors. The Capitol and Library of Congress are about eight blocks up the street. Vibrant Eastern Market is a fun weekend destination. The night-life and restaurants on 8th St. are only four short blocks away. You can also walk to Yards Park and the Navy Yard. If you need a scenic body of water fix, the Anacostia flows into the Potomac there. A lively river-front scene offers concerts and festivals in the summer. Parks abound here as well. Garfield Park is at the end of the street with lighted tennis and pickle ball courts, two playgrounds and a short-cut path to Whole Foods, which comes in handy for last-minute food shopping needs. Harris Teeter and Trader Joe's are also within walking distance. If you value exercise, you can't do any better than a full-service gym right across the street! I can roll out of bed and get to my favorite Body Pump class in under five minutes. Our street still maintains its quiet charm despite the busy gym. Street parking is abundant, however can be tight sometimes during peak gym hours. Most patrons live on the Hill, so are respectful of the neighborhood. I can't say enough glowing words about our home on the Hill. We raised our daughter here (revered Brent Elementary is just up the street) and now that she is a freshman at Univ of Michigan, I am taking a year to spend time with my parents. I hope to leave my home in loving hands during my absence. And if you choose to rent here or any place on the Hill, may you enjoy this fascinating neighborhood in one of the most fascinating cities I know- Washington DC.
