We custom built our home in 2017 to take advantage of the incredible ocean and mountain views and indoor-outdoor California lifestyle. With windows in all directions and bifold doors that open up the living space to two separate patios, you can wake up to the sunrises over the mountains and the sunsets over the ocean, cook your meals while overlooking the Mission, and dine over the garden. We love cooking and entertaining, so we built the main living area with an open floor plan. The kitchen has a large island that is ideal for cooking with friends or family. The custom fir cabinets provide a sense of warmth inside the open, spacious living area. Our aesthetic is modern eclectic, so not all of our chairs match (on purpose) and you will find old doors and hardware throughout the house that add to the character of the modern space. We built the home to be energy efficient, so we rarely need any heating, but there is radiant heat in the concrete floors and a small woodstove that we will burn mostly for ambience in the winter. We built up so that we could take advantage of the view, but that means there are lots of stairs to get into the house (although the living area and bedrooms/bathrooms are all on one level). Our house has 2 bedrooms and a loft (see photos of the removable ladder) that fits a queen size bed. There are 1 and 1/2 baths (with a shower and a clawfoot tub - both with a view), as well as a private outdoor shower behind the house. We rent a downstairs one-bedroom to a longterm tenant (a quiet, single professional). The downstairs unit has a separate entrance, but you will cross paths when you are entering and leaving the house. They are lovely. One of the downsides of building our own house is that there are still a few "projects," including trim around the windows and doors, and stair treads (the stair treads are currently painted plywood that will someday be hardwood). You can see this in the photos. Our home is located a quiet, friendly neighborhood (Davenport has 300+ residents, and we know all our neighbors well) with a public elementary school a block a way. There are lots of kids and professionals in the neighborhood - it is a vibrant, thriving community. There are a couple of restaurants, a lovely bakery, and a trail to the beach a very short walk from the house. Most everyone in Davenport commutes into Santa Cruz because it is a short 10 minute drive on scenic Highway 1 into "town", where you will find grocery stores and restaurants. However, it is so lovely in Davenport that most of us don't leave the north coast on the weekends!

Davenport
Santa Cruz
Comments: Davenport is a small, close knit community just ten minutes from the UC Santa Cruz campus, surrounded by open space, redwoods, and beautiful pristine beaches.
Comments: We currently have house cleaners come every other week. We are happy to continue that, with the tenant covering the cost.
Comments: We have a toddler and all furniture/supplies associated with a small kid. We are happy to move that out of the house or discuss your needs if you have little kids.
We are willing to leave plants if folks are interested in having them in the house, but they will need watering. We also have raised garden beds that renters are welcome to use. Santa Cruz/Davenport is a great place to grow food year round.
