Dramatic 1200 square-foot renovated upper duplex with a rather large deck in the midst of the most vibrant neighbourhoods of Toronto. |
This is a retreat in the city within walking distance of everything that you could possibly need. Architecturally renovated to combine a modern aesthetic while retaining some original features of this 160 year old house - this space is filled with character. There is a pleasing juxtaposition between the original distressed door at the front of the house and the surprising interior. Open concept design, except for the bathroom and the second bedroom, with three distinctly separated areas. All the cabinetry, built ins and details are hand crafted and custom designed for the space and made from mahogany, birch, glass or steel. On the second and third floor - the view is predominately of trees, sky, roof tops and the - oh so important - CN Tower. (You can see it at night through one of the skylights as you lie in bed.) On the first floor is the kitchen, with a Jennair stove and grill; dishwasher; and pullout island, is adjacent, but separate, from the dining room with a walk out to a 500 square foot deck with a grape arbour and shed. The bathroom, with its claw foot bathtub, and second bedroom are behind a hand finished and waxed curved wall which opens up to the living room with a cathedral ceiling that is over twenty feet high; a wall of built in mahogany bookshelves and storage; and a gas fireplace. Going up the floating mahogany staircase you come to a 450 square-foot loft that over looks the living room. Built in is an eight foot closet which is four feet deep; a twenty foot long birch shelving unit; and an eight and half foot long desk placed under one of the three skylights. In total there are three skylights, two sliding glass doors and six good sized windows - the space is filled with light, unlike most Toronto homes. There are two work spaces outside of the second bedroom (no one has yet to use that room as a workspace). Above average sound insulation between the two units and the house next door. There is a ductless air conditioner for the really hot days, but the air flow through the apartment means you can use it sparingly. Laundry facilities are in the basement of the house.
The entire house is smoke and animal free and has been for over a decade. Parking is on the street, but you do not need a car. Place to lock your bike up in the front yard. And, if you are nice, you can paddle my canoe which I have on Toronto Island - less then an hour away by transit and ferry boat.
We can talk about what you need and want, because it can be furnished or empty. $2200 per month plus some reasonable utilities (I pay for the lion's share of the heat).
Located a half hour walk from the University of Toronto campus or Ontario College of Art. A five minute walk to Toronto Western Hospital and the shuttle (ten minutes leaving every fifteen minutes) to Toronto General, Princess Margaret, Woman's College and Sick Kids. Less than ten minute stroll from one of the ten hippest intersections in North America (via Utne reader) in Little Italy. Steps from the Dundas strip that the New York Times recently described as the up and coming neighbourhood to invest and hang out in. Five minute jaunt to Queen Street West, which was hot before anywhere else was. Fifteen minutes west will have you pass through Trinity Bellwoods Park (one of the largest parks in the core of the city with a recreation centre and a pool) to get to the fresh and quickly evolving Ossington street. Heading east, on the way to the U of T campus, you can detour through historical and quirky Kensington Market. Another block over gets you into Chinatown. Everywhere there are galleries (this is the gallery district), incredible restaurants, interesting shops, and places to buy every type of food imaginable. Public transit is a minute away.
Preferably I am looking for someone long term, or until next Spring. If I have a gap for August, I would be open to renting it out for the month or a part thereof for a reduced rate.
